The rest of the morning was spent looking at calves and piglets before a picnic lunch with a lovely view.

After lunch we headed out to see three fields, each growing a different crop. See if you child can remember them all.

First up was a field of grass and clover just across the road. We watched a machine cutting the last of the field and were amazed to learn it was all controlled by satellite. Children can you remember what the cut clover and grass was for? That’s right, to feed the animals in the winter – silage. Adults, how much does that fancy machine cost?!

The next two fields were a little way away so we hopped on the trailer and Stuart’s tractor towed us to a field of wheat. Can you remember how we know when the wheat is nearly ready to harvest? What might the wheat be used for? Have you eaten any today?

Final stop was a field of oil seed rape. There was lots of chatter about going to ‘see the oil’ and we looked at the plants that were just losing their distinctive bright yellow flowers and growing pods of seeds. We learnt it is the seeds that give the oil. Can you remember what the oil is used for?

This weekend pay attention to your food. Are you eating things that could be grown at Gore Farm?

Finally a massive thank you to our parent helpers who I hope enjoyed the day. Also to those of you who responded to the panic plea for help on Wednesday night and tried to change arrangements specially. Your support is appreciated enormously and we feel very lucky to have such a great group of families behind us. Thank you.
