Food miles are a way of attempting to measure how far food has travelled before it reaches you. It is a good way of looking at the environmental impact of foods and their ingredients. It includes getting foods to you, but also getting waste foods away from you, and to the landfill!
A good website to calculate the amount of miles food has travelled is foodmiles https://www.foodmiles.com/ It also shows how much carbon was used to fly, train and car the food to the UK.
Can you name some foods from different countries around the world? Where do Avacado, tomatoes, bananas, pineapple, coffee, tea come from?
It is important we grow, buy food locally and eat food through the seasons.
We will be doing lots of growing of food in the school gardens in 2023
